It's dark, even if I get to Taupo all the hotels would be closed.

It's a luxury camping van. 
Two youngsters driving the rental van up to Auckland.
18 hours they've drove without stopping.
A nice session of rap impro and beat-box and here I arrive in Taupo past midnight.
