Start of a long day, Yacine siting by the side of a road. It's 9 am. He's got 450 kms to do.
He's got all day. A car stops. 1. He offers me a 30 km ride. He just had his first baby yesterday (a daughter), so today he took a day off.2. A 1968 Valiante. Probably stopped to make me admire his old car which surprisingly still works brilliantly. 20 kms with a neck licking dog. 3. A minivan. Next to a two-year-old kid... can't get a word of what he's trying to say but at least I make him laugh. 15 kms 4. Another van with loud reggae music and two hitchhiking colleagues inside. There all going to this reggae festival for three days. Should I follow them ? Hummmm... No, probably don't have enough time. 60 kms.
5. A rented car. A sir moving for his work spotting locations for film scenes. 100 kms and one piece of advice go to National Park Village to go hiking in the mountains before going to Taupo. Why not ? 6. An adjudant in the army with his pack of beers in the boot quite annoyed by the so small amount of soldiers now a days and the way youth is destroying itself. 30 kms 7. A van with a Maori couple. Quite laid back. I'm behind on a double bed with a dog at my feet. A joint ? euh... no thanks ! There going to the reggae festival as well. 8. A guy going to Taupo to sign a franchise for some sort of special dance and it's dancing school. A hurried businessman. Today we can buy anything.
9. An English couple in their rented car that will drop me at the beginning of the trek. Well actually to the village where you usually stay before starting the trek. But no more room in the hotels, still got day light, I met as well start the trek. Tonight I might as well sleep outside ?. 10. I fail to find the start of the hike with my false map and end up being brought there by a new-zealand couple. It was actually 15 kms away from where I was ! 12 hours of hitch-hiking, it's 9 pm... How many people I've met !
